With identity theft on the rise, it’s more important than ever to properly dispose of your sensitive financial and legal documents you no longer need. Gratefully, many banks and credit unions are helping to prevent identity theft by offering free document shredding days.
Free Document Shredding Day
I walked into my credit union earlier this week and noticed a sign advertising a free “Shred Your Stuff Day” in late April.
On that day, anyone can bring in any amount of paper they want to get rid of. It will be shredded right before your own eyes in a mobile shredding truck parked in the credit union’s parking lot.
I have never heard of a free document shredding day before, but I’m definitely going to take advantage of it this year because I’ve got a bunch of old files I’m sorting through right now.
If you haven’t heard of free document shredding in your community, check with your bank or credit union to see if they plan on offering a free document shredding day. If they’re not – go ahead and suggest that they plan one as a service to their customers and the community.
Document Shredding at Home
If you’re tired of holding onto files and piles of financial and legal documents until the next free shred day is offered, you can also buy your own paper shredder. That way, you can shred your unwanted documents as soon as you’re done using them (like after you balance your accounts each month) in the privacy of your own home.
But before you go crazy and shred everything in your house, be sure to read: What financial records should I keep?
Document shredding keeps the clutter down in your home and office, and helps protect you from identity theft by safely disposing of unwanted legal and financial documents before they get into someone else’s hands. How often do you shred your unwanted documents? Does your bank or credit union offer a free shredding day in your community?
